PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Springfield Thunderbirds began their two-game preseason slate in Providence on Friday, but came up empty in the goal column in a 4-0 loss to the Bruins inside Amica Mutual Pavilion.

Providence's power play got off to a fast start in the preseason as Brooklynn Kalmikov connected on a pair of strikes in the opening 10 minutes. His first connection, a one-timer at 2:48, gave the Bruins the early 1-0 edge. The winger showed a quick release at the 9:29 mark, catching a pass from Jacob Perreault, and quickly uncorking a snapper that eluded Will Cranley to give the home team a 2-0 lead.

The T-Birds' defense stabilized, and Cranley settled in to keep Providence off the board for the following 30 minutes en route to 13 saves in 40 minutes of action. Springfield's power play had three chances to get on the board, but reigning ECHL playoff MVP Luke Cavallin went a perfect 17-of-17 in 40 minutes to keep the T-Birds scoreless. Lynden McCallum further solidified the Providence lead with a 2-on-1 wrister that zipped by Cranley at 18:10 of the second period to make it 3-0.

Cranley finished his night with 16 stops, but the T-Birds offense had no answers for Cavallin, who pitched a 23-save shutout. Max Andreev added one more insurance tally on a redirection at 14:09 of the final frame to round out the scoring.

The T-Birds complete their exhibition slate as they host the Bruins on Sunday, October 5, at the MassMutual Center, with puck drop set for 3:05 p.m.
