Springfield, MA – The Springfield Thunderbirds made a roster transaction on Thursday, recalling defenseman Ed Wittchow from the Manchester Monarchs of the ECHL. The Thunderbirds subsequently assigned recently acquired defenseman Teddy Doherty to the Monarchs.

Wittchow, 23, made his professional debut with the Monarchs this month, scoring two assists and posting a +5 rating in four games. The University of Wisconsin alumnus put up 17 points and 150 penalty minutes in four seasons with the Badgers. He was selected by the Panthers in the sixth round of the 2011 NHL Draft.

Doherty has previously had brief ECHL stints with the Missouri Mavericks and Cincinnati Cyclones. The Hopkinton, Mass. native played four seasons at Boston College, parlaying 80 points in 144 games. He was acquired by the Thunderbirds from the Milwaukee Admirals organization, along with forward Eric Robinson and goaltender Brandon Whitney earlier this week.

In celebration of the Opening Night sellout milestone, the Thunderbirds will be offering up to $5 off the price of a ticket for this Friday and Saturday’s games.  This is an opportunity both for those who were unable to make it to Opening Night as well as those who want to come back for more. The Friday, October 28th game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers is $1 Night (with $1 hot dogs, soda, and popcorn). Friday night also marks the launch of the Pregame Concert Series sponsored by MGM Springfield. Saturday, against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, features T-Birds Trick or Treat for Halloween. Each game is set for a 7:05 p.m. ET puck drop.
