T-Birds Take on Bruins Sunday in Providence

Jan 14, 2018
Providence, RI – The Springfield Thunderbirds (16-21-1-1) make their third visit to the Dunkin' Donuts Center this season seeking their third straight road victory as they take on the Providence Bruins (22-11-3-0) on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. ET.

The Thunderbirds had won just three road games all season entering their three-game road swing this week in Hershey, Allentown, and Providence. However, Springfield has seen its play rise this week, thanks to a 35-save performance by Sam Montembeault in a 2-1 overtime win on Wednesday, while the offense exploded for six tallies, including four in the second period, in a 6-2 romp of the Phantoms on Friday night.

Springfield will have its work cut out for them in Providence, however, as the Bruins have won seven of the eight lifetime meetings between the two teams at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, including each of the first two games in the Thunderbirds' 2017-18 season schedule. Providence came away with a 5-2 win on Oct. 7 and a 3-2 triumph on Oct. 13.

The last meeting between the clubs saw the Bruins overpower the Thunderbirds at the MassMutual Center with three goals on their first seven shots en route to a 6-2 win. Springfield has just one win against the Bruins this season, a 4-3 overtime win on Nov. 12 thanks to Alex Grenier's game-winner.

The Bruins have hit a rough patch this week, dropping their last two contests, including a heartbreaking 3-2 decision on Friday to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on a goal by Casey Bailey in the final minutes of regulation. That loss came after the Bruins let a 3-2 lead slip away on Jan. 7 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center to Syracuse in a 4-3 defeat.

Springfield follows up the meeting in Providence with three home games over the course of the following five days -- a 1:05 p.m. showdown with Hartford on Monday, Jan. 15; a 7:05 p.m. match with the Hershey Bears on Wednesday, Jan. 17; and another 3-2-1 Friday against the Binghamton Devils at 7:05 p.m. on Jan. 19.
